James Ward (Medal Of Honor, 1864)
James Ward (born 1833, date of death unknown) was a Union Navy sailor in the American Civil War and a recipient of the U.S. military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions at the Battle of Mobile Bay. Born in 1833 in New York City, Ward was still living in the state of New York when he joined the Navy. He served during the Civil War as a quarter gunner on the . At the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864, he was wounded as his ship engaged the at close range. Refusing to go below decks, he instead manned a gun after its crew had become casualties, and then took depth soundings ("heaved the lead") from platforms on the side of the ship's hull (known as the chains) until nearly being crushed when ''Lackawanna'' rammed ''Tennessee''. James D. Ward (born 1935) is an associate justice of the California Courts of Appeal, Fourth District, Division Two. As an attorney, he argued two cases in front of the U.S. Supreme Court that defined key rights for the free press under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Biography Education Ward graduated from Longfellow Grade School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1949. He graduated from Washington High School, also in Sioux Falls, in 1953. Between 1953 and 1954, Ward attended classes at both the University of Oslo in Norway and the University of Vienna in Austria. __NOTOC__ Jimmy Ward (1909 in Tullagha, Kilfenora – 1987 in Milltown Malbay) was a well known Irish traditional banjo player and lilter out of Milltown Malbay, County Clare, Ireland. Ward originally played the flute, piccolo and the whistle, but changed to the banjo in the 1940s. Ward was one of the founders of the renewed Kilfenora Céilí Band in 1927. He was still a part of the band when they won three consecutive All Ireland championships at the Fleadh Cheoil. He is the namesake of ''Jimmy Ward's Jig''. In 1974, Ward decided to leave the Kilfenora Céilí Band. A self-taught guitarist and pianist, he is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the band Sparta; he is also a co-founder of the post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, which he formed in 1993 when he was 17 years old.
